Training Classes: A VKC Experience!

posted Nov 14, 2013, 8:37 AM by Rosanna Himmel   [ updated Nov 14, 2013, 8:42 AM ]

Adopting a VKC Pet is the beginning of a grand experience. The pets are natural, intelligent, and alive! As they live with you, they develop individual personalities and come to feel like an actual pet who logs into SL with you.

Although it is not as necessary as with RL pets, the VKC Pets will benefit from some training and you will benefit from some understanding of their skills and abilities. This is why the VKC offers free classes. We want you to enjoy your pet to the fullest.

Here is a rundown of what's on the schedule now. All times are listed in SL time.

Tuesdays at 4:00 — Pathfinding Basics — English

"Pathfinding is one of the coolest features available for Second Life animals" says Renate Roeloffs, VKC Proven Trainer. All the new VKC Pets are able to use it to navigate intelligently around their environment, finding their way around obstacles and through doorways. Learn how to use the simple tools in the SL Viewer to mark the objects in your VKC's Pet's home as either "walkable" or "obstacles" to help your pets move around more efficiently. Although you will be able to see the results of Pathfinding with any graphical SL viewer, you need a recent viewer with the built in Pathfinding tools to get the best from this class. The current Linden viewer, Firestorm viewer, or Niran's viewer is best for this class," recommends Renate. Join this class in the Training Area on Turing Isle at 4 in the SL morning.

Tuesdays at 11:00 — Basics Class — English or Danish

VKC Proven Trainer Garmina Xenga has a class at 11 in the morning every Tuesday at the Training Area on Turing Isle. "I have a beginner class," explains Garmina. "I usually teach the basics, and sometimes the more advanced." The class is always centered around the basic things that people need to know to live happily with their VKC Pets, but the exact content will vary depending on what the participants want to learn. "I usually teach in English, but I can have a class in Danish, which Swedish and Norwegian people can understand," add Garmina.

Thursdays at 11 (when announced) — Advanced Class — English

"In the advanced class, we talk about the unusual commands, the movement commands, overriding instincts, ping and tp, the init command, and the commands you've never even heard of," says VKC Proven Trainer Rosanna Himmel. "If you attended last week or the week before, you are welcome again. No two advanced classes are alike because we talk about the things YOU want to know!" This irregularly-scheduled class takes place in the Training Area at Canis Beach, usually on Thursdays, often at 11, but it all depends on Rosanna's RL schedule. Listen in the Virtual Kennel Club group for announcements about this class.

Saturday at 15:30 — Beginner's Class or Pathfinding Class — English

Beginning with the very basics, VKC Proven Trainer Keiichi Ichtama will determine what you already know and then guide you through the techniques required to safely keep your pet where you want him, to string commands together into tricks, and to use marks in your tricks to get your pet to find places on his own. Classes always close with a question and answer session.

On alternate weeks or when there is an interest, Keiichi teaches a pathfinding class in this time slot. Using a demonstration house, Keiichi will guide you through the steps to make your home, club, or business "pathfinding friendly." Keiichi agrees with Renate: "The current Linden viewer, Firestorm viewer, or Niran's viewer is best for this class."

Class takes place on Saturdays at 15:30 in the Training Area at Turing Isle.

Sundays at 10:30 — Basics Class — German

"We have much customers, who don't speak English or not really good. Therefore, they don't ask us for help and miss many informations about their pets," VKC Proven Trainer NaniSternchen Martinek observes. "Some of them I have in my friends list now and they come always to me if there is a problem or a question. And I'm sure, we have many more German-speaking customers, but I think, they are too shy to ask us, because their English is not good. So, I had the idea to make a class in German." The class takes place on Sundays at 10:30 (this is 19:30 German time) at the Training Area on Turing Isle. The class generally covers the basics for beginners. For people who already know the basics, Nani will also cover advanced themes.

If these times or topics are not what you need, contact any of the VKC Proven Trainers and ask that someone contact you about arranging a class that suits you.
